Ban human clones or expect them soon, U.N. says

Posted November 12, 2007 4:09 PM

From USATODAY.com Tech - Top Stories:

The international community faces a stark choice: outlaw human cloning or prepare for the creation of cloned humans, U.N. researchers said Saturday. Previous attempts to reach a binding worldwide treaty foundered over divisions on whether to outlaw all cloning or permit cloning of cells for research. The best solution may be to ban human cloning, but to allow countries to conduct strictly controlled therapeutic research, including stem cell research, according to the report from the Japan-based United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies. Almost all countries oppose human cloning and more than 50 nations have introduced laws banning it. But lack of binding global legislation gives scientists an opening to create human clones in countries where bans do not exist. "Failure to outlaw reproductive cloning means it is just a matter of time until cloned individuals share the planet," said Brendan Tobin, a human rights lawyer who co-authored the report.

Ahhhh...Human clones.....not really an engineering topic, unless we are talking about bringing about the attempts to recreate Albert, etc.

And you think that banning clones will stop them do you? Were you born yesterday?

No, it will just force them to do it in underground laboratories to keep from frightening the villagers. Are you serious about allowing the global public to know that we are cultivating human parts from a stock of "clones" to keep other humans alive, etc.

Then you get clones escaping, getting false id's in different countrys, more population problems, etc.

Born yesterday? What kind of question is that?

I didn't say anything of the sort.

"Born yesterday? What kind of question is that?"

The question wasn't for you, it was for the author of the article. The point is, that banning won't postpone it at all, in fact I have heard that it has already happened.

Ok, what do you think the public persona rationalization/message for cloning is or is going to be when it is legal and in the open?

What is the purpose for cloning?
