Will Robots Build Your Next House?

Posted November 18, 2007 8:28 AM

Robots already route, palletize, and package many construction materials, including insulation, bricks, windows, and steel beams. According to Scott Lang, president of Motion Control Robotics, polyisocyanurate (rigid insulation usually produced in 4 ft by 20 ft sheets) is "cut, put into cartons, palletized and unitized at a rate of 42 linear meters per minute." Expect to see robots on the construction site soon. Bricklaying robotic cells have passed a proof-of-concept.

I can certainly see robots being used in high end construction as in manufactuing plants, or high rise buildings, but as long as there is cheap labor (as in the US), the economics for a robot for building a family house are probably not there. Maybe some day...

Its not difficulty for robot to build a house now, but its not easy for it to decorate interior.

Peeking into my crystal ball, I see nanobots building all types of structures from raw materials at the job site, fusing silicon, carbon, and boron to create crystalline structures that are as hard as diamond and nearly indestructable.Imagine bridges, skyscrapers of unimagined height, with all supporting utilities located within.

Imagine flying over a city and looking down onto a sparkling array of jewels below, each unique in form and function.Or perhaps this is just the result of too much to eat and drink last night, that will seem silly when I am fully cognizant.....

I get those visions after watching too many Star Wars episodes.

The main problems will be moving from a static robot with moving workpiece, to a robot which will require to move around a fixed base.

Houses cannot easily be built in one place and then shipped to another, nor would it be easy - or practical - to have a robot bigger than a house (to give accuracy to dimensions/angles).

But, if you just want to build a wall, then this is already happening using concrete. The issues are with integrity where supply of raw materials is not keeping pace with the capabilities of the machine.

You make a good point about issues related to the robot having to move. However, prefabricated houses are a big boon in the usa. They're usually built in a factory in 2 parts then shipped and screwed together on-site.

I've seen them - but not made of bricks.

Prefabs were used extensively in the UK just after WW2. We stay in one - designed to last 20 years and still going strong. These are 3-bed semi-detached houses, with steel frame and the interior arrived on site in sections.

There were also aluminium framed bungalows - most are now gone, but a few remain amidst the recent terraced boxes. The only downside of both types has been insulation - but recent overcladding has helped tremendously.

Here most modern houses are built with timber frames - custom built at a factory - with the outer brick walls added once the roof is on.

It is not far having robots building houses; once the time comes the researchers finds the material to strenghten the rubber , become more flexible and lighter to move miniature hydraulic actuators. Then that maybe the time when life is worth a robot. What about sleeping and travelling iwithin a robot? In my opinion its another better home.
