Jamming Up the Airways

Posted November 22, 2007 5:41 AM

Although airways in the U.S. are protected, cell phone jamming devices raise questions as to who really controls the airways. These devices can prevent cell phones within a 30 ft radius from communicating with cell towers. Private business enforces no cell phone policies. Is it free (cell phone) speech or cell phone free zones?

Technically these are illegal here in Canada. (Though when has THAT ever stopped a hacker from building any device?) There are places which need cell phones to be de-activated....fuel storage areas come to mind, aircrafts, operating rooms, even the entire length of highways. (One wonders whether the value of communication for emergency services would outweigh the hundreds of deaths annually from highway cell phone use...rather more than handguns I might add, and we regulate/restrict THEM!)

I would personally LOVE to have a little pocket sized jammer that I could switch on so that I could get a a few moments shut eye in the bus without listening to the teenage girl beside me exclaim about how that cow of a former girlfriend bought the shoes she had her eyes on.

Freedom of speech? Don't make me laugh! It might take my attention away from the road, and the dip stick swerving into the side of me who thinks his car is a phone booth. Oh heck, I'll take a break and watch a movie. If I can hear it over the cell rings from that bunch in the front rows.

I'd like to have a pocket sized jammer for use during church services too.

And also during chess tournaments. Based on the stereotype of the "highly intelligent" chess player, we might assume that they all have the sense to turn off their cell phones during games. But no, it has gotten so bad that many tournaments organizers now apply a new rule that a player loses instantly if his/her cell phone rings during a game.

Yup. Illegal in the US, too. The article even makes that point. I know that some restaurants have tried this and gotten into trouble with the FCC. Thou shalt not block the airwaves!

But, oh, so desirable!

I dont beleive any country could win if we added anti 900mhz-1800mhz "sheilding" to building/cars/restrutants/chruchs ie passive sheilding tuned for the cell phone range.
