Image of the Day: Europe Faces Invasive Frog

Posted December 13, 2007 9:43 AM

From LiveScience.com:

Frogs species may be finely adapted to their environments, but new research shows immigrant species can quickly upset nature's delicate balancing act. Over time, scientists counted water frog populations in Europe and noticed that the marsh frog (Rana ridibunda) can crowd out indigenous species like Graf's hybrid frog (Rana grafi) and the Iberian water frog (Rana perezi).

What is it with " . . . nature's delicate balancing act." ? Haven't creatures the world over been evolving over the eons, with dominant creatures upsetting the balance all along? How come some people cannot accept the fact that the world changes? Why just look at the mess the Colorado River made in the U.S Southwest. How could we ever let that happen? Properly implemented erosion controls could have mitigated all that damage. That just made the landscape uninhabitable. And that pesky volcano in Washington State. Ruined a perfectly good mountain.

Certainly, we as a species have accelerated some of these changes and we are guilty as charged. (Snakehead fish, invasive clams, plants, birds, whaling, habitat destruction, you name it.) But on the other hand, change is going to happen whether we do anything or not.
