Cyber Attacks on the Increase

Posted December 27, 2007 8:24 AM

Cloak and dagger and special ops move over. Governments use the Internet to launch unconventional attacks on foreign government networks to gather intelligence, spread disinformation, and disrupt communications. This CIO article also notes in the private sector an "underground economy" already includes specialized auction sites, product advertising, and even support services. Could you be the next target?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Networking & Communications, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Networking & Communications today.

I was a recent victim. Actually, not so much me as the Scientific American blog-space. You see, I'm advancing a new theory that, if correct, would unhinge particle physics understanding. The hypothesis is that matter and antimatter gravitationally repel. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but all the old theories are based on a matter-only Universe. Anyway, as soon as the blog began 12/14, particle physicists jumped on to prove me wrong. Instead of proving me wrong, one actually supplied documented evidence of a phenomenon that can easily be proven by my new model. The first article quickly rose to get Scientific American's top rating spot... On Dec 20th, a "system error" occurred. "file missing" said the message. Access was cut off to all the blog sites for four days. Fortunately, the webmaster was able to fix the damage and no data lost. To see the action go to http://science-community.sciam.com/forum.jspa?forumID=300005039

I did get a small ounce of revenge. See my most recent entry. It's all about cyber crime--without actually pointing a figure, of course. I firmly believe the saying, "All cockroaches hate light." To not say anything allows them to win. If it's a war, you might as well declare sides.
