Posted January 15, 2008 8:17 AM

From The Engineer:

Burlingame, California-based FotoNation has developed a means to detect smiles in portrait photos taken by digital cameras and camera phones. The SmileCheck software, which made its debut at the 2008 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Convention, is an extension module of FotoNation's FaceTracker product line.

But if old Aunt Nellie, who hasn't been able to smile for seven years since her stroke, is to be in the picture, what then? Or the cranky crying children, those irrascible tongue-stick-outers, etc.? Suppose it's a photo of a serious moment and nobody is expected/supposed to be smiling, such as a family portrait at a funeral service?

Talk about a whiz-bang solution to a non-existent problem!

I can see uses for such technology, but NOT for this use. As an amateur photographer with many years practice, I think I am capable of picking the right moment for the shutter to open.

"it pelts you with beer"

Gives a whole new meaning to "stoned", doesn't it?

As W.C. Fields once said: "Drown in a vat of liquor? Death, where IS thy sting?"
