Will This Robot Be Your Co-Worker Soon?

Posted January 19, 2008 8:00 AM

Honda's ASIMO robot may not be quite as sophisticated as Star Trek's Commander Data, at least not yet, but it is almost more android than robot. The bipedal ASIMO can walk, run, and climb stairs — all while sensing and avoiding humans. Multiple ASIMOs communicate wirelessly with each other as well as a PC, so they can determine which unit is best-suited to perform a required task. When the units run low on battery power, they walk over to the nearest charging station and hook themselves up. See more of ASIMO at Honda's photo gallery.

So these robots can comunicate with a PC as well as each other, what if someone hacks into the PC, will he be able to control these robots?

I can see it in front of me now, this someone programs a or all the robots to attack the humans within a factory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrifying, truly a bad idea.

Spencer.

I agree. While the technology involved in the development of these robots is impressive, it is nontheless frightening.

i think it s great it will help get the job done with better quality, ideally

allowing more design time, feedback from consumers and lets face it

except for us a lot of the world isnt going to do any work if possible so

engineering and maintenance needs all the help it can get

"More android than robot?". Maybe we should return to Karel Capek's original meaning (in the play "Rossum's Universal Robots" be scared, be very very scared). Then we wouldn't need the word "android", and programmed automata could be viewed as the direct followers of 19th century machines that they undoubtedly are.
