Tapping Our Cell Phones

Posted February 23, 2008 7:44 AM

As the airline industry looks at passenger cell phones and PDAs to speed check-in, it is also touting the environmental benefits and enhanced security aspects of this paperless boarding procedure. All sounds promising, but is there a down side?

Looks good. The down side(s) that I see:

1) It requires everyone to have a cell phone that can display the bar code and pay for the message. There are some folks out there that still do not have messaging plans. The company my wife works for prohibits text messages, has removed them from the plans, etc. What about the folks that don't have a cell phone. There are still a few of those out there!

2) What happens when they send the wrong boarding pass? I guess this could occur under the current system if you have it sent before you get to the airport as well.

3) This one if for conspiracy theorists: right now, the gov't needs a court order/subpeona to get information about your cell phone. By opening you cell phone to the TSA, you are providing the gov't with your number without a court order.
