Laser Pulses Form Black Hole

Posted March 24, 2008 8:06 AM

By launching pulses from an ultra-fast laser into a microstructured optical fiber, University of St. Andrews researchers have created an optical analog of an event horizon, a setup that may allow scientists to study the phenomenon of black holes in the laboratory. In particular, the mechanism theoretically provides a tool for studying Hawking radiation, the ultra-low levels of radiation that are believed to escape from black holes.
