Work with PDF files without using Adobe Acrobat

Posted April 16, 2008 8:45 AM

From CNET News.com:

I'm a big fan of the PDF file format. It lets you share files with people using almost any type of computer without worrying about whether they have the right program installed to view it, or whether it will look to them the way it looks to you. The problem is Adobe Systems' Acrobat, which is simply more software than I need to meet my meager PDF requirements. (It's also more annoying than any two Office apps combined.) The fact is, you can create, convert, and edit PDF files without adding any software to your system. And if the files you work with are small in size and number, you can do so without paying a dime by using the Zamzar e-mail-based conversion service.

Sounds like a security nightmare.

Thank you for sharing this. It's exactly what I need for posting my lecture notes on a course web site, while also maintaining good formatting when students print hard copies of the web pages. All without having to buy the expensive Adobe Acrobat Writer software. I don't worry about security issues -- Zamzar can read and circulate my chemistry lectures if they want.

Hmmm...might actually spread the education, mightn't they? And all by accident, too!

These useful accidental discoveries are one of the reasons that I regularly scan the various CR4 threads. The wit, humor, and general craziness of the members also keep me coming back on a daily basis. Lately I've also started scanning another good tech site, slashdot.org
