Europe Spends Nearly Twice As Much As US On Nanotech Risk Research

Posted April 21, 2008 9:37 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

A new analysis by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies indicates that European nations are investing nearly twice as much as the US in research primarily aimed at addressing the potential risks of nanotechnology. The analysis also highlights a substantial over-inflation of the federal government's nanotechnology risk-research investment figures for the US. The new PEN assessment of nanotechnology risk-relevant projects identified by the federal government's National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) for fiscal year 2006 found that only $13 million was invested in projects highly relevant to addressing possible risks. Over the same time period, the PEN analysis found European countries invested nearly $24 million in projects with the primary aim of addressing nanotechnology risks.

Well, given the apparent anti-science, anti-intellectual approach to things of our current administration, where's the surprise in THIS?!? Guess we'll have to rely on the good will of our European neighbors to pull our chestnuts out of the fire. Hey, guys, remember WWI, WWII? We saved y'all's bacon back in the day, how's about a shout for a brother in need today, eh? Please...? Help...?

I am a little confused on this one are you saying that all of the countries in Europe are spending more than the USA? Or is each country in Europe spending more? I don't think it is very accurate to compare one nation's activities with a whole contenint's if this is in fact what you are saying here. I probably should just be quiet on this one but you never know till you ask.

I could be wrong, but I took this to mean the European Union collectively. Comparatively, that should be about equivalent...I just hope they'll share.

Well i don't know much at all about the nano subject but if we discover something useful to do with it and they figure out a risk that we need to know about it should be close to an even trade. I am sure it will depend on which of the countries control the discoveries.
