Do You Demand Interoperability?

Posted May 24, 2008 8:25 AM

Factory floor plug-and-play is not only becoming pervasive, it is becoming easier — as noted in a recent Control Engineering editorial. But Chief Editor Mark Hoske raises an interesting question when he asks, "Is interoperability important enough that, when dealing with vendors, you specify compliance to specific standards?" What's your experience?

the world is going to demand interoperability.

it started with standardization. the next move will be commonality.

the question is why should a hammer in the Far East be any different from a hammer in North America? the answer is, "it should not." and so all proprietary technology will precipitate to a baseline architecture and construction. only aesthetics will be the brand differentiator.

interoperability will drive the demand down, and the price with it, as well. in the manufacturing sector, wealth will be more spread evenly to all sizes of enterprises, and the giants will move into new technologies where interoperability is still inapplicable.

so much for stargazing. back to my lunch.
