(Video) Audi R10 Battles Harrier "Jump Jet"

Posted December 01, 2006 7:53 AM

From TechEBlog:

Yes, the Audi R10 helds its own when put up against a Harrier "Jump Jet". What are your thoughts on this marvel of modern technology? The main novelty of the R10 is its engine: a TDI turbodiesel engine, running on Shell V-Power Diesel. It is a 5.5 L (335.6 ci) all-aluminium bi-turbo 90° V12, with common rail direct injection of more than 1600 bar (23,206 psi). Its output should be 650 hp (485 kW) (regulated) and 1100 N·m (811 ft·lbf) of torque, and its usable power band is between 3000 and 5000 rpm.

The Audi may have been able to keep up with the harrier over the 1Km race. However as the video shows all the Audi saw after that was the harriers exhaust as it continued to accelerate and climbed away up into the wild blue yonder.

A better test would be against the Suziki Hyabusa or the new Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14. This would be a test of Land based speed vehicles. Racing a plane is just absurd and tells us nothing valuable.

I'm going to take a wild stab at this, but I would imagine the hayabusa, which i saw on youtube, goes 0-150 in like 10 seconds, I'm fairly sure would beat this TDI in a straight line race.

However, here's the general stats i scrounged from wiki:

Audi R10: Weight: 935kg, power: 650HP ~ 1.44kg/hp

Hayabusa: Weight: 510(loaded)kg, power: 175HP ~ 2.91kg/hp

This is, of course, negating how much usable horsepower there is in the power band, how much torque can be applied at low speeds, and also negating wind resistance, but this says the R10 woudl win. I'm sure it would win through corners.

Either way, I guess my original thoughts were not so clearly right.

I wonder if you turbocharged a hayabusa... www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgIxOYHV7Mk
