Jet-engine Silencer for Lesser Noise Pollution

Posted July 08, 2008 8:28 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Although the drone of the jet engine is reassuring to a passenger, it's a source of noise pollution to those reside in the vicinity of an airport. Dimitri Papamoschou at the University of California has filed a patent, earlier this year, for a jet-engine silencer. Apparently the source of the jet engine's noise is from the turbulence in fast-flowing air from the engine. Dimitri has formulated a way to separate the expunged air into two channels of high and low speeds. The high-speed air is channeled to the top so the noise is directed upwards. If it works noise on the ground could be reduced by more than half (about 6 dB). Although his idea is still in nascent stages, hopefully a permanent solution will be out soon.

Great idea. Now, if only he can find a way to miniaturize it so that it'll fit into the mouth of a politician. That way, we won't have to put up with all the worthless noise pollution they produce anymore.

I was under the impression that jet noise is a function of the eighth power or so of the relative velocity of a stream relative to the air adjacent to it. So I would have thought that the aim would be to make the velocity gradient of air from the axis of the jet to the free stream as gradual as possible.
