Rubik's Cube to Reveal Octopus Handedness

Posted July 09, 2008 8:44 AM

From Scientific American:

In an attempt to find out if octopuses are right- or left-handed, er, tentacled, scientists from the Sea Life Center in England, have provided 25 of the beasts with colorful Rubik's Cubes to play with in the center's aquariums across Europe. Many animals in nature are known to favor one appendage, but researchers are unsure whether that holds true for the eight-armed octopus. (They could turn out to be "octidextrous"—equally good with all tentacles.) Biologists, who worry about the stress that these creatures are prone to in captivity, want to determine if octopuses have a preferred side for receiving food, as this may make their lives just a little bit easier.

Biologists, who worry about the stress that these creatures are prone to in captivity, want to determine if octopuses have a preferred side for receiving food, as this may make their lives just a little bit easier.

Do they seriously expect us to believe this is the REAL reason? They take us for fools. Any poor octopus would be delighted to be fed at all.

Clearly they're working on something much more devious. My first guess is that they want to transplant an octopus brain into an enormous 8-legged armored mechanical battle walker and they need to know which tentacle nerves to attach the primary laser cannon to.

Although possilby they're just envious of the smug feline researchers down the hall who keep making all those LOL cat pictures. They're hoping LOL octopus will be the next big thing.

Well, we know they can distinguish different shapes and patterns, engage in what seems to be play, and conduct observational learning. But even though they are probably the most intelligent mollusc, cute they are not...

I don't trust anything with eight legs (tentacles). I'm just saying. Except for squid, but only because I really like fried Calamari. Though, I don't know that its especially meaningful to say you like something that doesn't really have much taste to it.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but while octopi have 8 legs or tentacles (octo = eight, pod = feet) while squid and cuttlefish have 8 arms and two tentacles (arranged in pairs) for a total of 10 appendages. It's a fine distinction, true, but a distinction nonetheless. And I know you value precision and accuracy...

Actually I'm glad. I was sad there was an exception to my general and arbitrary rule concerning hating animals with eight legs (tentacles), now I'm consistent.

As for my valuing precision and accuracy, I just prefer correct answers to right answers.
