Photonic Crystal Cloaking Device?

Posted July 19, 2008 8:09 AM

Invisibility cloaks aren't just the stuff of fiction. Computer simulations by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign engineers show that concentric rings of silicon photonic crystals can provide optical cloaking, tuned by adjusting ring width and spacing. The effect is currently 2D; extending it to 3D requires concentric silicon shells.

The problem with people that wear these cloaks is that they walk around naked

Easy to find - just look for the place you can't see...

And the invisibility cloaks mentioned in old myths, could they have been advanced tech from some visitors that were remembered in stories? Think about those Inca aircraft models, "toys" made of gold, that when scaled up actually can fly, The batteries used by the Sumerians and their knowledge of planets that weren't even visible. Shades of "The Twilight Zone"!!!

It does seem strange that things that were told of in myth and legend are actually possible through advanced technology. It does make one wonder where those ancient peoples got those ideas and if Earth might have been visited by some advanced race around 3000 BC or earlier. It would explain some strange things from the past, but I think that it is difficult to separate hoax and wishful thinking from actual fact, since both sides have vested interests in proving the other wrong.

If Icarus was the science fiction hero of his day, Wilbur and Orville were the advanced technology of the future that reached his goal. Our Luke Skywalkers may well have an advanced counterpart some 3,000 years into our future. Remember "Clarke's Dictum".
