Could Others Take Control?

Posted July 21, 2008 8:20 AM

Wireless networks are everywhere, from individual homes to the shop floor. Have you thought of what might happen if someone gained unauthorized access to your company network? In addition to being able to access proprietary information, they might wreak havoc with your automation equipment. What have you done to protect against this?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotics Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotics Systems today.

its not a new topic to consider.

we know the wireless net is an open system. anyone can monitor it.

so you have to encrypt your information when transmit.

there are lots of method to do it.

Hi cnpower,

I have been a regular visitor to CR4 for some time but this is the first I have seen an article on this subject.

For others like me, could you please direct me to earlier topics, or continue with this?

I am particularly concerned because I have a wireless system at home and do my banking via internet. I presumed that an https; site was safe!

Thanks

Scot

You don't read it in CR4 doesn't mean its its not around. Google "wireless security" and seat back. Check your wireless setting and make sure you're using WPA and not WEP.

I agree with cnpower,

The wireless security and http(s) are different subjects.

Wireless usage is growing and the security considerations about it stays as an actual topic.

Another issue is single laired security. No single system is unbeatable.

If all your security is in your wireless encryption and then if it is circumvented you should have known better.

Compartmentalize and backup, otherwise a disgruntle employee, a nut case or a cracker will cause you all kinds of grief.

Disaster can come from mother nature also. After the fact is piss poor planning.

Who said I could spell, it's a lie I tell ya.

The way most people act I'm not sure I'd claim this planet.

Sorry spelling is not my forte. Just not wired that way, high IQs rarely are wired "normal".

At least I don't spell "of" OV any more, I could read 7th year college by the age 16 but wrote with 6th grade penmanship and spelling until almost 40. Still improving slowly but Shirley. (yes I know, surely I do).

Every once in a while I'll go a whole paragraph with no errors. Puts a smile on my face.

It also doesn't help that my laptop keyboard drops letters regularly.

Oh ya guest GET OVER IT! I already have. Laws of hospitality mean I cut you more slack as a guest, but that means you should act the guest.
