Person's Geographic Origins Located From DNA

Posted September 02, 2008 3:30 PM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

One day soon, you may be able to pinpoint the geographic origins of your ancestors based on analysis of your DNA. New research uses DNA to predict the geographic origins of individuals from a sample of Europeans, often within a few hundred kilometers of where they were born.

Could be very interesting. Some estimates state 10% of children are not by the Father. Multiply that by x generations.

I'm only fairly sure of one of my four grand parents. Two others may or may not be of European blue blood. Add another 10% per generation possible included variation by genes from outside the family. This could be fairly revealing to ones actual genetic origins.

Hi UV,

This has been going on in the UK for some time now, and my heritage is "Pict", but then again my surname gives the game away!

The picts were the first inhabitants of Scotland and the original peoples of the UK, so I can claim a very, very long heritage!

So...what this research ultimately will do is tell me specifically what area of the world I need to travel to in order to find untapped distant relatives that I can borrow money from?

Great! I'm packing my bags now!

This is very interesting, and I've read a good deal about the topic elsewhere. But it's amazing how many people from various cultures have refused to participate, usually on "political" grounds. Of course, most of them are from previously highly-exploited groups like Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, etc. So maybe their motives are a bit more understandable than we of Pictish, Celtic, or Teutonic ancestry would comprehend.
