Engineering Victory: The Pearl Harbor Navy Yard

Posted December 07, 2006 4:47 PM by Steve Melito

Today is the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In 1942, a New York Times correspondent named Robert Trumbull detailed the salvage efforts at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. Trumbull's dispatches did not run because of wartime restrictions, but are available today for the very first time. You may need to subscribe to the Times on-line in order to view these free .pdfs, but for those who love the history of technology, the chance to read about America's salvage efforts is priceless. Here's the link to the New York Times special section.

This is a great series of articles. Thanks for posting it. If you want to read more, there's a good book: "Descent into Darkness" by Edward C. Raymer, one of the Navy Divers who worked on the Pearl Harbor salvage. In it he details all of the major salvage efforts and the problems they encountered.

You're welcome, Steve. And thanks for passing along the information about Descent into Darkness. I look forward to reading this book. Raymer sounds like quite a colorful character.

A year has past since I wrote this story. Today, I read the following in the LA Times online.

"When we're gone, we're gone," said 87-year-old Jack Ray Hammett. "We're already just a paragraph in the history books. Will even that disappear when the last one of us dies?"

No, sir, Mr. Hammett. We will keep your memory alive.
