Do Design and Manufacturing Communicate?

Posted November 15, 2008 8:40 AM

As traditional OEMs increasingly outsource their manufacturing operations to independent contractors, fewer people inside the OEMs understand the issues and challenges that manufacturing inevitably carries. Engineers with hands-on experience get promoted or transferred or go to work directly for the contractors. Lacking necessary expertise, OEMs must depend on the contractors who are inevitably less familiar with the peculiarities of the products. How many members of your team understand both ends of the process? How much do you rely on the contractors for their expertise? How thoroughly do they know your products? What are the consequences of the resulting communications gap?

Most designers do not not which material has what tolerance and what limitations in processing. That's the reason, manufacturing guys like me conduct seminars for designers to understand a material, its reology and the ways to process any material.

In our company, all design and programming people have to test and commission the equipment they worked on. It might not seem cost effective to send a design engineer to a remote location for a week or two to complete the equipment startup but they come back with a better understanding of why design short-cuts are not always a good idea. Same for programmers, motivation to do quality work comes from having to face your own bugs in the field.

This also apply to production where designers help to solve the problems.

If we keep design and manufacturing separate , it is very difficult to bring out the product successfully. A design engineer should necessarily understand the difficulties of the manufacturing process. Shopfloor experience or regular interaction with manufacturing, will surely help.
