Software Testing – Difficult and Necessary

Posted December 09, 2008 8:19 AM

The adage that all software contains bugs hasn't changed in the decades since it was first proposed, nor is it likely to in the foreseeable future. Software complexity has skyrocketed even faster than the hardware that runs it. Although software testing methods have become more methodical, they remain incomplete. How do you assure that your software correctly performs its assigned tasks? How often do you encounter buggy software? How do problems with third-party software affect your ability to make and test your own products?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Test & Measurement, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Test & Measurement today.

Personally I think they should have to put any software thru a test using a Super Computer that could find the holes in their system before being allowed to release it.

Sadly, computers - even Super, can't do anything human hands can't. Just faster.

Coming from a structured software development environment the best we have been able to achieve comes in basically three areas:

1. Requirements - revisited regularly.

2. Inspection - Peer review is best.

3. Test - At every level, based on the requirement, not the code.

Sadly Schedule is always the reason for not doing some of these.

Sadly schedule never believes software development will overrun, and the time budget always gets trimmed in test.

The only way I know to rein in management is PROCESS!

Knew everyone would like hearing that.
