(Video) World's First Chainsaw-Powered Motorcycle

Posted December 15, 2006 7:38 AM

From TechEBlog:

The DOLMETTE is powered "24 DOLMAR chainsaw engines, fed into to a 5-speed Harley-Davidson transmission by a series of twelve toothed belts." For use in the Dolmette the engines were tuned and tweaked to deliver 5.2 kW of power (7.1 PS) at 10,000 rpm. Maximum torque delivery is 5.5 Nm at 7,750 rpm. When all 24 are combined, the result is a 24-cylinder power plant with a total displacement of 1.9 litres, a power output of 125 kW (170 PS) and 130 Nm of torque at the centrifugal clutches

To think that I thought I had too much time on my hands. This is probably the most futile piece of, because I wanted to, engineering I have seen for a long while. If anybody can think of a more pointless piece of engineering please feel free to contradict me.

On the contrary, I'm inclined to agree with you! This looks about as practical as re-inventing the wheel. Could possibly be a "useful" exercise for basic junior engineering student!!!???

Yes, it a classic example of how not to build something. I can't think of anything else you would learn from it.

A highly tuned chainsaw motor isn't an easy thing to pull-start; yanking ropes to start 24 of them amounts to madness. I'd rather ride a bicycle.
