USB Shaver: Rechargeable, Less Crappy

Posted December 18, 2006 4:04 PM

From Gizmodo:

A bit like the other USB Shaver, this second horseman improves on the first in both price and functionality. Instead of being tethered to a USB port, this shaver is battery powered and rechargeable, which means you don't have to get shavings all inside your laptop because your USB cable is only 3 feet long. Good news for the poor Dell repairman who has to refurbish your machine.

Yet another abuse of the USB port, what are they trying to do, keep track of how fast your beard grows? The things people are sticking into USB ports is getting more ridiculous by the day. How long is it going to be till we see something like a USB cigarette lighter?

I seem to remember somebody telling me that they had an electric toothbrush that had a microcontroller with a USB port. The question begs what is so complicated about a tooth brush that requires 30,000 plus transistors and a high speed data interface. The glider I fly has less complex avionics than this.

By accident the USB port has managed to generate an international standard for voltage and connector configuration. It just seem a pity that they appliance manufacturers couldn't get together and develop their own standard rather than using a port that was intended for data transfer as a power source.

Ultimately I can see the data part being dropped from the USB connector just leaving the power source. Seems like backward engineering to me and I'm frightened to ask how much worse this can get?

PS If anybody tells me that somebody has already made a USB cigarette lighter I swear I will scream!

I'd bet USB cigarette lighters don't exist yet, but I imagine I could make it happen. Thing is, you only get like a hand-full of watts out of those, so it'd have to resemble a tazer

I have added another wire parallel to my AC house wiring, throughout the house. (As you can imagine, this required cutting into a lot of walls. I have a USB vacuum cleaner on order to help with the clean up.) Thus, at every outlet I can plug in a USB device (using the ac ground return for one lead). I have a USB-powered light aimed at the on/off switch on my MIG welder, which I keep in my garage/shop. When I light a cigarette, I simply follow the USB light to find my welder in the dark, switch it on, start an arc, and light my cig. What could be easier?

As you can imagine, my computer's power supply is a little overtaxed with the 342 USB devices I routinely use. But the obvious solution to that was to use another computer to power a USB refrigerator. I mounted my "main" USB supply computer inside the fridge.

Don't be such a Luddite; get with the flow.

Get that voice of yours ready for.....

http://gadgets.fosfor.se/the-top-10-weirdest-usb-devices-ever/

Although the George Foreman USB iGrill was an April Fools joke, I did see a mod that someone had done to power a small hotplate via USB. From memory it used about 5 or 6 of the multi way USB output adaptor cards (and a mountain of USB cable) to get the required current (in amps) to power the hotplate so that you could cook thin strips of bacon, etc.

Not too sure about USB powered heated gloves and slippers. You wouldn't want to forget to take them off, least you computer attempt to follow you out the room.

I almost burst out laughing when I saw the USB eye remover (I mean 'massager').

As an engineer I think that the USB self destruct console looks cool (but I would never buy it). I have found a local supplier of missile rocker switches, but have yet to come up with a project to include them in.

My favorite USB product of all time has to be the memory stick made of, well a stick of wood (just don't drop it in the forest or you will never find it).

I have also been informed by a friend that you can now buy a memory stick that looks like a dog. When you plug it in, a built-in motor causes the dog to move so that it looks like the dog is humping your computer. Wee . Who buys this stuff (I wonder if I could get away with using it to do a presentation to clients).

Jeez, talk about trying to get on the new technology band wagon. Anyone got any other examples?

How about a nice cup of coffee to calm those nerves, kept warm with your very own USB cup warmer AND combined 4 port USB hub (be careful not to scald yourself). http://www.boysstuff.co.uk/product.asp?id=13178

Guaranteed to be almost as effective at keeping you cup warm when compared to holding it in your hand.

Oh, just found the humping dog USB flash drive http://www.hiptechblog.com/ and the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI-pct3zy18&eurl=

Try sticking that in your pocket.

I realize that nobody has yet pointed me to a USB cigarette lighter bur originally I was going to say I would scream if I heard about a USB coffee machine and the coffee cup warmer comes close enough so

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

If we ran everything from USB ports could we solve the worlds energy crisis?

USB Cigarette Lighter Mod

Bear in mind that the pictures have been lost (not even the internet wants it!).

Looks like I spoke too soon.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Again.

If this keeps going the colour of my face will probably change again, something like nauseous green would seem appropriate.

You write:

"If we ran everything from USB ports could we solve the worlds energy crisis?"

Please keep this hush-hush: I have designed just such a system. I have a power inverter connected to my USB port right now. When I am using only half of my 342 USB devices there is clearly a lot of available power left over. So at those times, I fire up the inverter and sell the excess back to the utility company. I haven't seen my bill yet, but I am expecting to have to a net gain in my favor -- I'm projecting that I will use about $100 worth of electricity, but generate at least 4 times that! If my math is right, that means they should have to pay me $1200 this month alone! Seaplaneguy (who correctly asserts that his engine will run with 280% efficiency) will back me up on this.

Please keep this secret, and especially don't let the vast conspiracy of liberal-commie-whacko-overeducated-climatologists get ahold of it.

If you put all that power to use producing hydrogen gas from water electrolysis to power a turbine made out of a 12V DC hobby motor (with a 12V to 230V inverter attached) you can increase this by a further 2 times ATLEAST (the more stages of energy state conversion the better!), and 8 times if the colour of the reaction is purple (which proves it is utilising cold fusion, like some other groups attempt that was never proven. Its done on the internet all the time (and the photos of the screen of the voltage readings from the $5 non-calibrated, peak-reading multimeter prove it, along with the math (hey, 1 semester of high school science education is more than enough). If it doesn't then the problem lies with the world government using their satellite laser system to sabotage your process (ask bob' cousin's drinking buddy Zeke!). Protect yourself by looking in the bathroom mirror and saying Nikola Tesla's name three times.

LOL.

Don't worry, actual facts have no effect on people who have no clue and have absolutely no intention in looking at a problem impartially (or getting a proper edumcation to understand what is really going on). A brick is a brick, it is also a piece on construction material for building a wall or house, it is also a collection of mineral elements made up of atoms, but no one is going to convince me that it is a duck (no, it dosen't fly like a duck when throw it, your proving the wrong thing).
