Text Messages Are an Even Bigger Ripoff Than You Thought

Posted December 29, 2008 9:12 AM

From Gizmodo:

We all know that text messaging is overpriced, but the NYT has pulled back the technological shroud to find out that the prices aren't just bad, they're practically extortionate. The article goes into depth about how text messages are transmitted. In short, texts are unsurprisingly transmitted between towers over the main, wired network in the same way as cellular data, a portion of the journey that, considering the tiny amount of information in a 160-character text, costs very close to nothing.

Any computer geek worth half a grain of salt would know this. Voice vs a text block of 160 basic query characters. Your phone call drops more data than you could text in the same time.

At 3 cents a minute or less for long distance wholesale, how many data packets are in a minute? Most text messages take what? one data packet even five? simple logic says Rip Off. When I pay $39 USD for 1 month of 5Mb 24/7 modem access verses .25USD for texting without a plan or texting to much. The banks are not the only crooks.

quietly folds soap box and fades away
