Saving MRI Scanners

Posted January 02, 2009 8:24 AM

Free from hazards associated with ionizing radiation, the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in medical practice and research will be severely impaired by the pending EU Physical Agents (EMF) Directive. Exposure limits for low-frequency magnetic fields established in the directive are argued to be founded on obsolete data. Its implementation would render a suite of MRI procedures illegal and result in increased use of diagnostic X-rays and attendant radiation exposures to workers and patients. Implementation is postponed until April 2012, affording time to consider possible outcomes. What can be done to secure MRI benefits in the EU?

Virtually every medical procedure and medicine has its risks. If the regulators require zero risk for every diagnostic or medical procedure, modern medicine would virtually cease to exist. Approval of any medical technology needs to be based on scientific study and rational thought, including comparison with alternate procedures and technologies. Politicians should have no part in this process. In many cases they are neither rational nor scientific.
