Sticking It to Post-It Notes

Posted January 05, 2009 8:25 AM by Sharkles

Look around at all of the post-it notes on your desk. You know you have them. As handy as these little sticky notes are, wouldn't it be great to find a better way to organize the little everyday things we need to remember? A team of computer scientists at MIT have done just that, through the development of a series of software programs. The research team noticed that some people felt burdened by certain computer programs that were specifically designed to help them, such as address books and calendars. The tools that the group has developed are designed to alleviate this problem, increasing flexibility and reducing the burden of information capture.

Interesting concept, but I can't use it because I don't want to upgrade to Firefox 3.0...

I'm a fan of Microsoft Outlook's virtual "yellow-stickies", but have to admit, I fall back to the paper version from time-to-time. More personalized software (based on research like MIT's), like personalized medicine, seems like the next big thing in the software world. Where to store the personalizations, and privacy concerns, might be some of the issues developers will have to grapple with over the next few years. - Larry

Looks like the Free market beat them to the punch. try www.jott.com or www.evernote.com . also for big file transfers, check out http://drop.io/ It supports firefox too.

I find evernote better for organizing my magazine artticles and web gleanings; Jott would be great if you want to call in your lists to have them convertted into text reminders on line.

These are really cool.

Was going to start a thread on this, but hey, lets just go with this one.

Frankly, I prefer post-it notes. With electronic notes, I have to use several keystrokes to get rid of them. When I'm done with a post-it, I swoop it into the trash can with one graceful arm motion. Plus I can put it in front of my eyes where it serves as the reminder I intended it to be. On the computer, I have to remember to go where it lives and look at it, which sort of defeats the purpose... Sigh, I'm not really a Luddite, honest!

I think I also need screensaver of a double door on a third monitor. Just to confirm that there is life outside, out of this room, and free of virtual reality.
