What is Third-Hand Smoke? Is it Hazardous?

Posted January 07, 2009 8:09 AM

From Scientific American:

Ever take a whiff of a smoker's hair and feel faint from the pungent scent of cigarette smoke? Or perhaps you have stepped into an elevator and wondered why it smells like someone has lit up when there is not a smoker in sight. Welcome to the world of third-hand smoke.

This is typical over reaction by the media and press to pseudo-scientific types who have a predefined agenda (ie: removal of tobacco and the tobacco lobby). While I am not, nor ever have been a smoker, I believe smokers have rights too and that my rights are no more profound than theirs. Anyone here ever see the movie "Thank You for Smoking"? It is a hoot!!!

One of the reasons (if given the chance) I would vote to eliminate lobbyists is because I dont believe the lies perpetrated by the anti-tobbaco lobbyists any more than I believe the tobacco lobbyists.

This is why we have the global warming nonsense!!!

I am guest 2, I guess. Anyone who has ever walked into a room that has had a lot of smoking going on knows that an odor is left behind. It is a pretty long lasting odor. If humans can detect these chemicals by smelling them, it is pretty apparant that the exposure is pretty high. Is it a big supprise that there might be health effects from this?

I am not at all in favor of banning smoking when I am not affected, but I also do not like the stink, and if it affects my health, keep it outdoors or at home.

Everyone is so conserned about cigarette smoke but you dont hear anyone talking about the toxic fumes everyone breathes from car exhaust. It is way more toxic and is being produced by everyone not just one small group.

Non smokers need to get a life

The smell of <fill in the blank from the following list> irritates me. Ban it.

Hair spray, perfume, cologne, deoderant. the coffee you're brewing and drinking, that yucky lunch you're heating in the microwave, whatever that aromatic crud that you're snacking on is, feminine hygiene deoderant, your dog, your cat, your household freshener, your body soap, your foot powder, your general body odor when you invade mt personal space, and on and on and on and on...

Ban it all. Now. Y'all are gonna do it eventually anyway.

Grrrrrrr...

I have no cares about tobacco smoke but what is sold as tobacco is as far from it as Coca is to Cocaine.

If they didn't spray the left over chemicals onto cabbage leaves and blend it into the mix they couldn't afford the biohazard disposal costs.

I wonder how many tons of fiberglass is in each years Chaw to improve nicotine absorption?

I don't mine a smoke of good tobacco but don't trust many makers to get just tobacco. And I can't see paying to addict and harm myself with tobacco blended just for that effect.

The difference between profit and greed. Profit makes a living, greed destroys someone or something else to make more.
