Digital TV transition postponement all but certain

Posted January 23, 2009 11:32 AM

From Engadget:

We're actually having a hard time believing this ourselves, but word on the street has it that the Senate is "on the verge of passing a bill that would delay until June the date when TV stations must broadcast in all-digital format." Without Congressional action, all TV stations will switch off their analog signals on February 17th -- a date that has been blasted out to the general populace for years now. The issue is that millions of Americans are currently on a waiting list for one of those $40 vouchers, and evidently it'll take a few more months to get additional funding and clear the backlog. It's expected that the new switchover date will soon become June 12th, and you can find all the fine print just down there in the read link.[Via TVWeek, thanks Vanbrothers]Filed under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentDigital TV transition postponement all but certain originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 22:59:00 EST. Just posted a blog on this last week. Check it out here.

The End of Analog Television

I think it's kinda ridiculous they are postponing it after spending over 19.5 Billion to make the public aware of the date.

You're joking, right? This is the GUBMENT, where a couple of trillion is spent over the objections of the people to fix what is not fixable. This is the GUBMENT that bans the possession of weed, and throws you in jail and takes all your property, but grows and gives it to those who have the right paperwork filled out. It even has a built in wire so you don't have to use a roach clip.

What can possibly be ridiculous about a few month postponement so they can give away more money?

Sorry, but I feel better now.

Similarly ridiculous is how apparently the government mandated the switch to digital TV without conducting enough real-world tests of how it would perform. Or ignoring the results of such tests.

I've heard far too many stories about extremely poor or no reception (even with powered digi-tastic antennas), video/audio sync problems, extreme touchiness in antenna position, etc. Sure, probably these will be hammered out in the long run, but from what I hear it may be a bit of a wreck at launch.

Yeah, it mostly only affects those people who still rely on broadcast. But quite of a few of those still left, esp. in rural areas. And regardless of area, it's good to be able to pick up local TV when the satellite / cable is knocked out in bad weather.

How many days will it take before riots in the streets if you deprive a nation of food or TV?

Can't live without it!
