NASA Calls on Public to Vote For Hubble Telescope's Target

Posted January 30, 2009 9:11 AM

From SPACE.com:

NASA is turning control of the Hubble Space Telescope over to the general public to give non-scientists a chance to choose which target the iconic observatory should turn its camera eyes on next. The U.S. space agency is inviting the public to vote for one of six candidate astronomical objects for Hubble to observe in honor of the International Year of Astronomy, which began this month. The options, which Hubble has not previously photographed, range from far-flung galaxies to dying stars. Votes can be cast until March 1.

What I would like Hubble to take a look a is a little closer to home. Let's get Hubble to take pictures of all the landing sites on the moons lunar surface that mankind has visited and has left footprints, flags and some of the other bigger pieces of evidence that has been left behind. We know the time frames of our visits, so we can see if there is any signs of erosion or other movements on the moons surface. We will also be able to see if it is neccesary to send someone back to clean up the mess.

Oh come now. That would break the spirit of tens of thousands of "moon landing was a hoax" conspiricy theorists. But I kind of like the idea anyway.

By the way, the word on the street is that the flags the US planted have long since dissolved away under the intense UV. Although since at least one (Apollo 11's) got knocked over by the LEM's ascent stage exhaust, it and and any others that fell might have been partially covered by kicked-up soil. So maybe some small pieces will still remain for future collectable-hunters to dig up.

Sir,

I don't mind which object you target the Hubble onto.

I am just glad that the decision has been made that the Hubble will continue flying and will be repaired to do that. What a wonderful tool that brings home to us the otherwise unimaginable spectacles that are happening in space close and far from us.

Keep on rowing.

Thanks,

Bill Schlusser

I vote dying stars, theyr putting new instruments in hubble, they should work on calculating the observation of star mass, density and brightness of the decaying star, and with the new instruments they should pay close attention to the magnetic field of the star before during and after and also the "gamma burst" ratio, so we can settle the dispute about how far away an explodiong star has to be to effect us, that is my main interest of hubble, next issue should be black holes or pulsars
