Is This Car Really Worth $175,000?

Posted February 03, 2009 2:28 PM by CarDomain

I came across this Plymouth Fury on E-bay the other day. There is no doubt that it is a sensational car because it looks like a lot of time and money has been spent on it. What I find interesting is that the Buy It Now is set at $175,000. Is it really worth that much?

Personally, for me, it's not. With cars it is very easy to get excited about a project and over-capitalise. It reminds me of a client that we had when I was selling cars for a living. He had invested thousands in doing up a standard Ford Falcon. He had installed a racing motor and racing gearbox as well as various other bits and pieces.

Hmmm? Seeing that you can pick up a nice example of an original for under $10k and a decent rust free example in need of restoration for $2k-3k, I'd think you could build a "perfect 10" custom job for half of that. That drivetrain looks like big bucks. Nice job hiding all the wiring! Those interior patterns look rushed. Notice how the seats are bagging in places? Not bad but not a $175k interior.

I bet this car cost ~$80k to build and someone is looking to make a nice profit (or someone paid too much and wants to break even.) $175k might have been achievable a few years ago but not right now! I don't think anyone would build that thing without the direction of the prospective owner. I can only think a rapper or someone would want to build it, and now wants to unload it. Maybe it belongs to Andre 3000, hence it's name Outkast?

Only if someone is willing to pay $175k. But then they should use a portion of that money to get their head examined.
