Filter removes mad cow proteins from blood

A new filtering device can remove dangerous "mad cow disease" proteins from blood. Scientists say the device could prevent the spread of deadly prion diseases via blood transfusions. At least three people have died in the UK after receiving blood contaminated with variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (vCJD) - the human equivalent of mad cow disease. There is currently no test available to screen blood for the misfolded "prion" proteins that cause the illness.

Yes, there is!

There is a urine test which works on ruminants AND vCJD-infected humans. There is a great deal of political pressure counter to it. There is a fear of what will be found.

All it does is isolate and highlight the PrPsc prion - misfolded protein - responsible for BSE.

I have been to several seminars on this, but am not otherwise up on biology. From what I have learned, these prions cause normally folded proteins to duplicate the misfold if they touch each other - that is how the problem spreads. They travel throughout the host through the bloodstream attach themselves to brain cells if they contact them. Those not clinging to a host cell may eventually get get expelled.

Because of their method of duplication, the population expands slowly at first resulting in an apparently lengthy 'incubation period' for the disease. (It's not really incubation because the prions aren't self-reproducing life forms.) If you have a single one in you, even permanently attached to a brain cell, it must contact a normal protein to change it. Odds are against that. Then that new misfolded unit must attach to a brain cell to stay. Odds are against that, too. When it does, you now have two and the odds are better, but still pretty minuscule. Eventually, the odds stack up against you and lots are being made and you lose brain cells and begin to show symptoms. At this point you are pretty much done.

One problem with the prions is they are not alive - they need nothing to continue to exist - and therefore are not killable. Once out of the host, they remain infectious - no-one is really sure what breaks them down in nature, but very high heat will.

Clearly if you have but a single one sitting in your brain, no-one will know, and we can only find it by tearing your brain apart and examining every cell and bit of cell in it. But if an animal or person has built up enough to be continually adding to the population, since they travel around the body and often get expelled in urine, we can test to find out if that is occurring on a level which may be dangerous to the host and to anything eating the host. (If they are in the blood stream, they are in the muscle and bone.)

Now, that all said, the only way this test could find side effects from GMO's would be if the creation of malformed proteins was the side effect.

According to an article I just read,"Monanto whistleblower says genetically engineered crops may cause disease", the GMO's do cause prions or improperly folded proteins. I think we are in for an epidemic going stright back to this. It's not a matter of what foods have GMO's any more, it's a matter of what foods DON'T!
