Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Cool Cars: 1967 Triumph GT6 MKI

Posted February 09, 2009 11:45 AM by dstrohl

The best thing I like about owning a #3 condition car is that you can drive it in all kinds of weather and park it anywhere without fear of adding another little ding to an already less-than-perfect body. Then there are cars like my 1967 Triumph GT6 MKI.

It's 98 percent original, just as the workers at the Triumph factory in England built it nearly 43 years ago. bought it last April from the original owner who had babied it like it was a member of the family, which he sincerely felt it was. Driven during just that first winter back in 1967, the little fastback Triumph had seen almost no usage in the subsequent winters, which is why the body today is in such excellent condition.

Door and body rot were often a problem on these cars. May I suggest yearly spraying all the suspect areas (wings, doors and under the doors) with Waxoyl (spelling?) or similar.......and keeping a very close watch on them.

Nice car, never had one but I drove quite a few owned by friends.....

Ah the gt6 I saw one in the late 70's for my first time and was so enamored I tracked down the owner and got him to sell it to me.This began a long love hate relationship with the Prince of Darkness.Ever hear the joke .. Why do English people drink warm beer ? Lucas refrigerators. That car was fast and hot I remember getting stuck in traffic on Cape Cod I used a can opener to cut vents in the firewall .I eventually went to MGB for a better design but for raw speed ( It's A miracle I'm Alive) and unique handling and looks that car was very cool. I have a mint 78 MGB in the garage that pissed me off so I'm punishing it till it learns a lesson .I still have parts for that car from 30 years ago need any?

There were several GT6 models with quite a lot of differences, even in the body shell and glass believe it or not!

Also engines with different BHP and other differences, so one must be careful with spare parts!!

Its amazing what around 100BHP could do with a light construction (in comparison to today's cars!! At least most of them...

Years ago, many fiber glass part manufacturers produced lightweight parts to replace rusted out panels on many sports cars, not just the GT6. E-Type bonnets in F.G. were not only lighter, they had larger swellings for the front wheels as the original bonnet (hood for the USA) was damaged if you went through a pothole fast and bounced the wheel up to its full limit, as it hit and damaged the bonnet!!!! Not everyone liked the extra high clearances, I rather liked it!!

You could also change a Mk II Sprite into a quasi MK I (Frog eye) by replacing the bonnet, most people hardly noticed the rear end differences.....the engine was the same "A" series, but with a larger capacity.....
