See You on Facebook?

Posted February 12, 2009 8:14 AM

It seems to be the thing to do: get your own Facebook page and then you'll automatically be in a community of like-minded individuals. They will share their thoughts and experience with you and enrich your life with knowledge that benefits your career and life style. But can these new acquaintances in cyber space — people you have never met — replace having real friends who know you personally and take an interest in your life?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motors, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motors today.

Hi Moose - No, Facebook can't replace real-life world friends, but it can help facilitate a "re-connect" with with friends and work colleagues you've known in the past. After joining Facebook a few weeks ago, for a pretty narrow purpose - to explore family ancestory - I discovered many of the folks I went to high school with - Guilderland H.S. class of '84 - were active there. These folks went on to go to good colleges in the U.S. and Europe, and have prominent positions in their communities. So I'm a fan, at least for now. :) - Larry

I too recently joined Facebook in order to keep tabs on what my kids are doing. As a lark I typed in my l;ast name for a search and found that there are quite a few relatives on the site that I never knew about. While I will most likely never meet these people it is a lot of fun and truly interesting to correspond with them.

So yes I am a fan of facebook

Bob
