Do We Need a New Internet?

Posted February 16, 2009 9:09 AM

From Slashdot:

Richard.Tao and a number of other readers sent in a NYTimes piece by John Markoff asking whether the Internet is so broken it needs to be replaced. "...[T]here is a growing belief among engineers and security experts that Internet security and privacy have become so maddeningly elusive that the only way to fix the problem is to start over. What a new Internet might look like is still widely debated, but one alternative would, in effect, create a 'gated community' where users would give up their anonymity and certain freedoms in return for safety. Today that is already the case for many corporate and government Internet users.

"... where users would give up their anonymity and certain freedoms in return for safety."

I'd say lack of "safety" (uh huh) is by far the lesser of these two evils. If it ever comes to this, I'm pulling the plug.

Agreed.

The "old" Internet is a hopelessly tangled hodgepodge of wires, tubes and old hardware you'd find at a bad hamfest. All of which is being held together only by sticky coffee residue and the prayers of a secret circle of elite faithful.

But it's better than the alternatives that keep being floated. And isn't there also a plan afoot to start charging us on a per-site-visited basis?

I gues the new version would ask for an DNA sample before you can enter the "intercheck"

Oh great - it took me 5 years to teach my dad how to use the old Internet!

Nope the internet is not the problem. Our programs are. Based on bloat ware. If someone ever takes the time to write machine code, virus resistant, Windoze and Unix/Linux program emulators and sells it at an affordable cost we could all afford super computers. Oh yeah we already have them they are just full of BS.

When you start using the internet to pass machine code packets the work load would drop through the floor.

Shame on you, how else can MS & Intel sell bloated OS and quicker PC then, if they started to write correct Programs, Intel would suffer!
