An Inexhaustible Source Of Neural Cells

Posted February 17, 2009 8:51 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

Research scientists have succeeded in deriving so-called brain stem cells from human embryonic stem cells. These can not only be conserved almost indefinitely in culture, but can also serve as an inexhaustible source of diverse types of neural cell. The scientists have also shown that these neural cells are capable of synaptic integration in the brain.

Wow, it truly is a golden age in the biological sciences. I wonder if someday this could be applied in some way as a treatment to stroke victims? How fantastic would that be?

I was thinking maybe they could add these to beer, and you could replace brain cells just as fast as you kill them.

Wow, what a great idea.

I'm with the beer idea!

But seriously, the fact of having developed this source of human cell lines is a big boost for research. So much animal research (maybe 90%) turns out not to be applicable when tested on humans; drugs don't work or have side effects that are unacceptable. Human cell line and tissue studies are the way to go.

The really smart money in stem cell research is the newer somatic cell research, where they are developing the technology to grow you a custom organ from your own cells. No rejection issues, drug regimes etc. so it is really the best for the consumer/patient. That would also take the mickey out of transnational crime, with their big dollar business today trafficking in organs. Maybe ten years from now, they just won't have a market.. ha!
