Is Your Plant Dysfunctional?

Dysfunctional families may be more normal than 'normal' families that live a Brady Bunch existence — and industrial plants may not be much better. Does engineering talk to operations? Do either group include maintenance in their planning? What methods does your company use to open communication channels between operations, maintenance, and engineering? Are there other methods you'd like to see put into place, and why won't management listen?

YES, very much so. Ego's, plain arrogance, the ever present brown-nosing and my personal favorite "back stabbing" get in the way of business. I'm nothing-to-nobody but I want my team to win so I try to lead by example. If you can get Operations, Engineering, Production and Maintenance focused on the same goal and working together as a true TEAM you can win.....but good luck.

My last plant was. Seventeen years of disillusion! Thank heavens I have moved on to more normal employment. It was only that way "by choice" because of a few jerks that stay behind long enough to get into power positions. The Peter Principle rules.

What I don't understand is why this seems to dominate some industries. It always drives the truly good engineers away. Then again, good engineers don't deserve that kind of crap. Consequently, certain industries are doomed to reinforce their pathetic behavior. It's no wonder innovation is so uncommon.

Well, there is alaways a huge rift btw Ops and maintenance and Eng coz of several reasons.

(i) Ego. I don't know what happens to engineers who are in maintenance and engineering. Their ego will not allow them to accept any advice from an Ops guy.

Example: There was this simple design problem that took maintenance 6 months to solve when we in Ops had the solution in less than 2 weeks. All that time was wasted with maintenance trying to explain how Ops were ignorant on how to operate the equipment. It was quite a humiliating experience for me to imagine that someone we shared classes with felt that I had nothing to offer.

Result? Lots of money lost by the mal-operational equipment in wastage.

(ii) Budgets. Each dept does their budgets separately then hopes that their activities can be easily synchronised. Impossible!!

(iii) ......Eeemh! Will think of another. Let me get back to work

Operations Engineer.
