Can Google Save You Energy?

Posted February 26, 2009 8:19 AM

Google wants to help you monitor your energy usage, with an eye to reducing consumption. The company has developed a new software tool called PowerMeter, which allows consumers to keep track of their energy usage on their own computers. If you're interested, you'll have to have a smart meter installed on your house. Would tracking your usage in real time lower your electric bill?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Industrial Processing Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Industrial Processing Equipment today.

Doesn't it allready?

i check google for answers, firms, supplier and such.

I dont have to use the phone or hop in the car to go to these firms (or library) to get my answer. I can even order stuff through the information i received through google.

Also downloading ebooks and such is good for the trees

In a lot of businesses, there's a quotation that says "you won't know how you're doing if you don't measure it" or something similar. Another, similar quotation is "if you can measure it, you can control it". I think that's the basis for the idea of the smart meter.

However, monitoring usage in the house is not the same as in the factory where you have operators constantly watching the measurement and making adjustments as the process runs. The best that can be done in the house is watching where the peak usage is and try to spread it out over the day or week. You can also check out different appliances to see if it's consuming more power than it used to (a sign that it probably needs repair or replacement). You can also check the claims of an appliance maker about the power saving qualities of their product.

So, my answer is, no. Not in real time. Over time, maybe, but not real time.

regards,

Vulcan
