Obvio car will run on whatever fuel you've got

Posted December 28, 2006 1:50 PM

From SCI FI Tech:

All these environmentally-friendly cars of the future we always see require some fancy fuel, be it fuel cells, diesel, ethanol, or whatever fancy crap they've thought up to get you from point A to point B. How can you keep track of that when your garage is full of concept cars? What's to stop you from putting ethanol in where diesel should go and ruining your overpriced investment? Well, if you get the new Obvio "Tribrid" car you won't have to sweat it. That's because it doesn't really care what kind of fuel you put in it; it'll run on pretty much everything. Any combo of regular gas/bio ethanol, natural gas, or electricity will get you on the road, making it much easier to gas up. It has side-by-side seating for three for some reason and should be available at the end of 2008.

This looks interesting! The comment in the "grass hopper" section certainly does have "third world" potential. I am in the industry that exports fuel from South Africa to neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and the 'Democratic' Republic of Congo. The biggest problem experienced in this line is the theft of product. The losses are serious enough for certain transporters to withdraw their fleets from this route.

The pro's and con's of bio/eco fuel are many and varied and so long as their are two or more people alive on this earth there will be two or more opinions contradicting each other. For example, introduce this concept into a poor third world country and you could well have the oil companies (and the transporters still brave enough to carry export loads) on your back even if Greenpeace has given you the seal of approval and provided you can dodge bullets and land mines!

Pessimisms aside, I like this idea.

impossible with todays technology

a car cannot run on a diverse range of fuel

explain how it can run on banana peels.....

I find your use of the word impossible, interesting! This same thinking caused Galileo's' excommunication and murder. The same thinking now kills the simple carburization physics that produce an output of 50-100+ miles per gallon, thus after being purchased by oil companies are then buried deep in some catacomb. As for the use of banana peels......what is the by-product of any organic decomposition?

I think this is a positive move..

only an idiot would think you car run a car on any fuel

you couldnt tune a car to run on any fuel anyway

they have enough trouble running on 2 different fuels

Although the referenced article doesn't do a good job of explaining it, the car actually runs on three "fuels," gasoline, alcohol, or electricity (I used the quotes because electricity isn't really a fuel, as it needs to be generated, usually from another fuel source.) Hence "tribryd."

The article mixes the Obvio car up with a student-designed walk behind tractor that supposedly runs on any dry biomass - although they don't explain how. One possible way would be to grind and burn the biomass to run a steam engine.

Not cost effective

Compared to what? Remember we're talking about the third world here.

What about environment

Well, burning anything isn't great for the environment, whether its biomass, gasoline, or diesel oil. It's possible that you could build this to operate reasonably cleanly since, if it's a steam engine as I suggested earlier it would be using continuous combustion. At least you're releasing current carbon into the atmosphere, not carbon that was sequestered 400 million years ago.

Waste not--want not!

Think 11 times --see if you can avoid that car trip. Can't you walk down to the convenience store at the corner? Park the car in the Garage- keep battery trickle charged-feel good!

Socrates was once spotted in the Bazaar. Everyone came and asked of him.

"Teacher,-you? In the Bazaar?"

Teacher said "I came to see -what I can do without"

Now days it seems that when someone can not or will not work towards a solution, it is easier to attack the character.... Some individuals considered Einstein an idiot. Thanks for the compliment.......
