No More Speculation: Scientists Prove Ocean Acidification is Already Underway

Posted March 11, 2009 10:41 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

While concerns over ocean acidification are not new, a recent study provides more concrete evidence than ever before that the process has already begun. Australian scientists found that shells of the microscopic, amoeba-like organisms called foraminifera, which exist by the billions in oceans around the world, have become significantly thinner since the Industrial Revolution.

Nice try! The fix is in.

Let's all return to the halcyon days before the industrial revolution when sanitation was non existent and bubonic plague was a regular visitor. Instead of condemning mankind for the global environmental "crisis" we can revisit the Inquisitions, a much more productive endeavor.

A bit cynical? You bet! This mass hysteria gives me a major clog.

Nice strawman you built there.

From Guest:

"any good engineer designs for "worst case scenariio" -- period!"

If you can conceive the worst case scenario this is great. The problem isn't what you plan for it's what you didn't.

From beriberi:

" Let's all return to the halcyon days before the industrial revolution when sanitation was non existent and bubonic plague was a regular visitor. Instead of condemning mankind for the global environmental "crisis" we can revisit the Inquisitions, a much more productive endeavor."

Wow, that made me laugh. You are right. Let's just continue on and leave things as they are.

This isn't the inquisitions and people like you contribute to mass hysteria just as much as the doomsayers of the world.

Perhaps this would be a good sign that we need to reconsider our lifestyle choices and make future choices for the development of our global community carefully. The idea that we either have industrial revolution or don't is an extremely irrational comment. Perhaps you should consider some moderation. Unless you think that we do not have any environmental problems?

Here this quote is for you and all the other extremist that are for OR against this issue:

"In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves." - Buddha

Sit down and let the adult rationally discuss the problem and find a real solution. When you have something that can positively contribute to the situation speak up.

Yes, this goes for the two people that voted this reply as a good answer…

Wow this really bugs me because you are supposed to be intellectuals and professionals. Not squabbling children fighting over the last doughnut!

Speaking as an entirely rational objective observer, it's amusing to watch not only the "mass hysteria" pro-warmers but also the equally rabid knee-jerk deniers who madly rush to dismiss anything remotely supporting man-made changes on the environment.

It's way better than any reality show on TV!

Yes, I've post this sentiment before -- any good engineer designs for "worst case scenariio" -- period!

It is amazing how the proponents of global warming paint the opponents as hysterical bomb throwers while those trying to prove the man caused link are all rational and objective. If you read enough of these posts you will see some pretty shrill arguments from both sides and I accept my part in this.

However, the mere fact that this debate settles pretty much along political lines gives me a big hint. The "blame people first" crowd seems to think that the only thing mankind has contributed to this earth is negative and it is up to the government to take care of all the world's problems. If the formaminifera have thinner shells I am sorry, but I don't want to turn back the clock. I believe in the positive contributions we have made to this earth and yes we have admittedly made some messes. However, on balance we are good stewards of the earth and the "sky is falling" turns me off.

Give me rational discourse with no hidden agenda and I will study the situation and make a judgement. Give me a Learjet liberal like Al Gore or some of the Hollywood elites who says "do as I say, not as I do" and I dig my heels in real fast.

And you make the same mistake that many people do. Just because Al Gore is an idiot doesn't mean that the science he misrepresents isn't valid. If you want a "rational discourse", stick to the science.

I am sorry you misunderstand the position some people are taking. Yes there are the extremists that you talk about and they occupy the seat directly across the isle from you.

However those who recognise that the industrial evolution was good, but could be better are the people who will solve these problems. Not the government and not you, most because your not even trying. Personally I believe that if we can become better "stewards of the earth" it is irresponsible not to.

First off all the technology we use has been subject to countless improvements. Look at the coal industry. This does not need to stop it needs to improve. In India they use a mix of concrete which absorbs CO2 and becomes, I believe, lime stone. These are all realistic solutions.

The only thing I can understand from your post is that if someone says this is the end of the world you will burry your head and pretend the problem does exist.

Regardless of how serious the issue is we can still see that the effects are negative. Just because it isn't the end of the world doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything.

No politics drive this debate, just chemistry.

More speculation, how some scientists prove their science

So microscopic sea shells equal acidification not the precise measurements of the Ph?

DDT thinned bird eggs but now the data is inconclusive. Yes I'm skeptic but why not DDT thinning the Foramnifera shells?

Seriously It looks like CO2 increases may correlate with the thinning but how does acidification enter into this? Too little data was included in the article. And why did they publish in a small publication? The data and supporting conclusions should merit Nature or Science.

Don't shoot the querent but if I stated a question with this little supporting information on CR4 I would expect some questions on the details.

Keep flushing the nitrogen runoff out to sea and what do ya know there is an result oriented effect. Now we could aspire to result oriented correction
