Brain Scan Can Predict When You're Going to Screw Up

Posted March 25, 2009 10:31 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

Brain scans can pick up the distinct pattern of brain waves that occur when a person's attention lapses, and can therefore predict when the person is about to make a mistake, according to a small new study. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), researchers monitored the oscillations in brain activity for 14 test subjects. Each student was asked to take part in monotonous test in which a random number from one to nine flashed on a screen every two seconds, and they were asked to tap a button as soon as any number except five appeared. The test was so boring that even when a five showed up, the subjects spontaneously hit the button an average of 40% of the time.

So...I have a choice of wearing that whopping big scanny thing or I can just rely on my highly portable and possibly less costly spouse to tell me when I'm about to screw up.

Decisions, decisions.

Aw Jeez. This thing wouldn't know what to do if it were scanning me. I'd probably short circuit the thing due to my uncanny ability to screw things up on regular intervals .

Is it really necessary to brain scan someone to know that when he is bored, his attention will lapse, increasing his chances of screwing up?

To screw up... for me it's not a talent, or skill,

but a natural born gift with which I was bestowed.

the only salvation is the pleasure it gives the wife to correct me.

I would rather not know when I am about to make a mistake... that would take the fun and surprise out of what is going to happen next. As I recall, several great inventions have come from mistakes - long live mistakes!
