Lego Mariners Realize, Destroy Universal Childhood Fantasies [Boats]

Posted March 27, 2009 1:23 PM

From Gizmodo:

Everyone who's grown up with Legos has mused about the limits. Could I build a car? A house? A boat? Now you can tell your inner child: Yes! Just don't let him watch the end. Japanese boy band Arashi constructed a boat capable of keeping the whole group of four afloat, assisted only by the natural buoyancy of the boys' whimsy. It worked! For a while! Then, as you can see for yourself, things fell apart disastrously.

I want to know why they thought it would be a good idea to have a guy with a paraglider fan propel a Lego boat that was already starting to fall apart.

I also want to know why they didn't design this so that the pieces were interlocking rather than stacking them by color.

I don't think these are real Lego blocks. I checked my collection (Duplo to Bionicle) and those in the boat just don't match up.

Now I'm off to build a boat out of real Lego blocks and see what happens. It will probably only be large enough for my cat... and a bathtub test.

Please to post film of cat in boat - and any resulting wounds.
