Toyotas might shut down for drunks

Posted January 03, 2007 1:34 PM

From The Globe and Mail - Technology News:

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunk drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday. Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.

It won't help, drunks will simply wear gloves when they drive!

Years ago I read an article on a Chinese inventor who combined this already: the driver had to blow in a alcohol sensing device and the car would only drive it the driver was sober. No constructor was interested: it's killing your own market.

He also claimed that he had invented a lie detector that would block your words when it was a lie that you were going to tell, we never heart of that guy afterwards.

Not too long ago they were talking about a device that would display a number combination, the driver would have to quickly memorize it before it disappeared and then type it into the keyboard. Impaired drivers would find this task impossible. I don't know what became of it although I think there was some talk that it could be installed into a person's car with a history of drunk driving (by court order).

If something like this was installed in every car, the cliche of the terrified woman trying to start her reluctant car to get away from the bad guy could have an updated sequence.
