Europeans Urge Cleaning Up Space Junk

Posted April 03, 2009 9:34 AM

From Discovery News Top Stories : Discovery Channel:

Researchers concerned about an increasing amount of debris orbiting the Earth are calling for the active removal of space junk, saying it will ensure a safe environment around the planet. More than 300 scientists and other experts who met for four days at the European Space Agency said Thursday that sharing information is a crucial first step in preventing collisions and predicting with more accuracy where derelict satellites may fall to Earth. "We need to share more data," said Thomas Schildknecht of the Aeronautical Institute of the University of Bern. "We consider this most import and challenging part for the immediate future." Various international agencies track the refuse in space. The U.S. Strategic Command, which monitors space debris, keeps track of 13,943 orbiting objects 4 inches or larger orbiting the Earth, and there are thousands more piece that that are even smaller.

Cleaning up this mess going to be tricky. Vacuum cleaners don't work in a vacuum.

Giant ball of Play-Doh? Let the debris smack into it and get stuck.

On 2nd thought, when you combine space, Play-Doh and technological debris you're just begging to accidently create some kind of giant outer-space robotic dough monster. Look out Tokyo!

Quick Batman The galactic spider junk web

Just doesn't have the same rhythm as say Pigs in Space but we see the 20 thousand or so droppings the pigs have left to keep humans earthbound.

It seems to take a fatality at an intersection before they decide to erect traffic lights. Perhaps when orbiting junk damages the space station they might take the matter more seriously.

How do we accurately distinguish between Stinky Pete's ship and the debris?
