Mind-controlled Prototype Wheelchair is Unbelievable

Posted May 05, 2009 10:32 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

The mind-controlled wheelchair's prototype has been developed at the University of Zaragoza in Spain. It uses an EEG cap worn on the head, using a P300 neurophysiological protocol and automated navigation. This is how it works. The user sees a real-time visualization of his surroundings on the screen in front of him and then concentrates on the space where he wants to navigate to. Once the location is chosen, the user can just sit back and relax as the wheelchair will do the rest of work. Now isn't that cool! There is no information on the commercialization of this prototype. I really hope they would because it has been successfully tested by 5 different participants.

Unfortunately this article is far too light on details. But food for thought I suppose.

If I had my druthers, I'd very much like to work in this field. Developing new ways to better empower disabled folks must be one of the most rewarding (and sadly perhaps frustrating) tech careers.

When I think of the time we "waste" (and yes, I realize it isn't really a waste) on the whims of a clueless management by designing a trivial product feature or tweaking a process to save a dollar per year, it kind of puts work like this wheelchair in perspective.

But enough daydreaming. I have to go source an LED now. The color of which must "invoke the sensation of a young pine tree's scent".

If you want to find more nittys and grittys on this tech, search BCI - that's "brain-computer interface". There's at least one open source platform out there, so there's nothing to stop you from getting into it. I read about it on PubMed.
