Swine protection

Posted May 06, 2009 11:43 AM

From The Engineer:

A team of US researchers is putting flu vaccines into the genetic makeup of corn, which may allow pigs and humans to get a flu vaccination simply by eating it.

Didn't they try this in an episode of the X Files?

Or, alternately, the damaged / dead flu virus will mingle with that of the corn and millions of movie-goers around the country will contract "popcorn-flu" while viewing the latest movie featuring Larry the Cable Guy.

Fortunately for the researchers responsible, owing to the inherent illness caused by watching any film in which Larry appears, the corn-flu symptoms will be effectively masked and nobody will ever be the wiser.

This popcorn pandemic will die out with time as people continue to build their own home theater systems and the movie theaters go out of business. They'll then eat less popcorn since, as they no longer pay a premium for it, they'll eat less...reducing their exposure to the virus.

I don't see any advantage to having vaccine grown in corn: it takes a while to make vaccine with eggs but just as long or longer to grow corn. They seem to think that it's better because you can store it for a long time - for what?? since the flu virus mutates constantly and a new vaccine is needed every season. They can store it forever, for my money!

So the stockpile will be "junk" - but hey, it looks like corn, it smells like corn, it will be mistakeable for food. We'll be stuck with it, whether it has any "vaccine" benefits or not. And of course it will genetically contaminate the food supply.

A dandy match for the riverloads of Tamiflu that will be peed out - which doesn't break down readily in the environment, apparently, and of course will create the conditions for viral resistance simply by being everywhere...

So here's an X file: how and when was the gene for "greed-blinded corporate stooge" introduced into the medical science population?....

I have an idea: lets find government support to fund a sweeping flood of media propoganda where we tell people the vaccination is officially found in fresh fruits and vegetables! The more they eat, they healthier and more resistant to disease they'll be!

...apart from the white lie about the vaccine part it would be true!

It's brilliant! So much better than the other scenario, where they pretend it's food and good for you, but it really has some genetic vaccine in it.
