RevolutionaryBicycle Doesn't Use Wheels or Any Common Sense

Posted June 01, 2009 11:46 AM

From Gizmodo:

Guan Baihua—a guy in China—must know something that we don't know. Some secret law of physics that explains why the hell his bike has no wheels, but weird metal and rubber angled pieces. It's either that or he's just completely nuts. Apparently, he spent 18 months making this thing. Just imagine that: Only 18 months to create an amazing piece of advanced mechanics that will cause a lifetime of back pains to anyone who tries to ride it. Ah the Humanity, always pushing progress forward. Or backward. Or just crashing down into the ground.

Ah, obviously you don't recognize this hybrid between a bicycle and a rocking chair. The 5-lobe vs 3-lobe oscillation gives you a massage while you ride that you would miss if both were 3-lobed.

looks like a fan belt around the outside diameter of the wheel. is there a system to run the belt in a groove around the wheel? the wheels themselves probably dont turn???

Hi all,

looks pretty odd! Pity there is no video. If anyone know of a video please tell this forum.

Notice how the frame doesn't attach to the hubs but attaches to rollers on top of the wheels? Since the height of the wheels are constant at any measurement taken throughout their rotation (I don't think "diameter" applies here) it should provide a smooth ride.

This bike is a cool novelty without a real purpose, but it's not "without common sense."

Hello Pretenegineer,

I had not noticed the bike was supported on rollers which ride on the 'wheels'. A video would have given a much better explanation, if that is the correct word?

still looks like wheels to but in a Reuleaux triangle shape, i guess the pentagram shaped front wheel is to compensate for the Reuleaux triangleshaped wheel?

i looked at many posts on other web accounts of this thing and found no video. i guess that the out of round wheels do rotate and the bike frame does ride on the top ot the wheel, taking out the undulations that one would expect. the name on the frame is a bicycle manufacturing company in china. it must be something of an experimental "walk around the block to get across the street" thing......
