Exotic material fun

Posted January 11, 2007 2:21 PM

From Boing Boing:

The New Scientist has a nice round-up post on exotic materials, including odd stuff that gets fatter when it's stretched, frictionless superfluids, ferrofluids, and some neat and improbable dry ice stuff. 1. Dilatants - fluids that get more solid when stressed. The classic example is a mixture of cornflour and water - it's runny until you hit it when it becomes solid. The video shows how that it possible to run across an apparently liquid pool of the stuff because your footfalls solidify it. If you stop, you sink. (via Neatorama)

The thing to do, dude, is to, like, shoot dry ice from a potato gun into, like, your neighbor's pool. Unless he's already spiked it with cornstarch, of course.

'Ferrofluids' were used to cool the coils of those big bass speakers that rock-stars were constantly trying to blow. The most intriguing application I heard, was for a 'Wobbly' rubber covered Ferrofluid tile. If you have seen a centipede walk, then that is how this tile behaves when a suitable alternating current is supplied to the electro-magnets beneath. The application was for submersible marine craft. I think the base of a bath-time plastic duck would be a fun application.

I actually saw this while in Korea, where some guys filled a pool with custard of all things and ran across it. Though when they stopped, they sank.

Also the US military is experimenting with a cloth that is flexible, but when hit will become rigid enough to stop shrapnel.

Hi jeffguroo,

Now there is a thought, 'Flack Jackets' with 'Edible' armour.

What flavours does it come in?.....The British Army Catering Corps, Artist's Rifles could make a few suggestions.....and put the recipe to the test. Perhaps with layers of tough but flexible 'Toffee'.............I think I know the person to contact.

I know that NASA researched 'Edible' laminate furniture for the Space Shuttle and Space Station.
