China Readies its First Robotic Mars Mission

The rapidly ascending Chinese space program is setting its sights on a new target: Mars. China plans to send an orbiter to the Red Planet on a Russian launch vehicle later this year, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The nation's first Mars probe, Yinghuo-1, will piggyback on the ambitious Phobos-Grunt mission, a Russian spacecraft that will seek to return soil samples from Phobos, the larger of Mars's two tiny moons.

I understand why this is newsworthy, but it sometimes seems that the media is a bit overeager for us to be "excited" about every one of China's accomplishments. In my own opinion, this news story from yesterday was more noteworthy.

I'll bet $5 that says this probe is made to look like a smiling panda or a kitty and is made entirely out of off-the-shelf humidifier and MP3 player parts.

And another $10 that soon after the probe's arrival China will excitedly announce that they're the first to discover something astonishing that has eluded everyone else. 50-50 that it'll be "proof" of life on Mars.
