How Stun Guns Work

Posted January 12, 2007 3:33 PM

From HowStuffWorks.com:

This week, Taser debuted a new designer version of their controversial stun gun, the Taser C2. Stun guns fall into the category of non-lethal weaponry they can incapacitate a person without causing permanent damage. On the old "Star Trek" series, Captain Kirk and his crew never left the ship without their trusty phasers. One of the coolest things about these weapons was the "stun" setting. Unless things were completely out of control (as they frequently were), the Enterprise crew always stunned their adversaries, rendering them temporarily unconscious, rather than killing them. We're still a ways off from this futuristic weaponry, but millions of police officers, soldiers and ordinary citizens do carry real-life stun weapons to protect against personal attacks. Like the fictional phasers of "Star Trek," these devices are designed to temporarily incapacitate a person without doing any long-term damage. In this article, we'll find out how stun guns and Taser guns pull off this remarkable feat. While these weapons are by no means infallible, they can save lives in certain situations.

I was a firm believer for many years that the launching of a slug of metal at ballistic velocities was the answer to many problems and that non-lethal weaponry was a waste of the weight. I have seen in recent years, though, where many people have been senselessy killed because the soldier or police officer had no other option available. I would never try to second-guess the officer that shoots a bad guy - that's his decision and he has to live with his actions - but sometimes having an attacker convulsing on the ground for a moment while he wets his pants can give that officer the option to regain control of a bad situation and not necessarily have to use lethal force to do it. It can be a good option.

Does a Taser interfere with a pace maker?

I don't believe it does - I think it is safe for anybody.
