How Large Is a Petabyte?

Posted July 08, 2009 3:37 PM

From Gizmodo:

13.3 years of HDTV content. That's approximately 58,292 movies, which means an equal number of large pizzas. So one petabyte equals 52 tonnes of pepperoni pizza. Yes, my head has assploded. For other equivalents, click and zoom in. How big are 20 million four-drawer cabinets? As big as the Sears Tower? I have a hard time visualizing that. Strangely enough, I don't have any problem visualizing 52 tonnes of pepperoni pizza.

Yes, my head has assploded.

Words fail me (as do my limited choice of emoticons).

Forget the pizza analogies.

With Moore's Law barreling along as it has for the past 30 years, in the next 10 you'll be able to carry every song, every book and every movie you will never even have time to watch/listen to in your shirt pocket. For example, my Archos 5 IMT has 250GB of disk space and I've uploaded all my music and movies to it (not even half full yet) and it would take me a year to listen/watch it all. And yes, it fits in my pocket.

The bigger question is : When does sneakernet trump our antiquated copyright laws?

Pizza sounds good right about now though.

With the announcement of the 2TB SD cards I figure a petabyte can't be that far in the future. If they make a 2TB micro SD then 500 of them may not even be so physically large.

I figure 3D HD tv can't be that far away either, and that will take up more space per movie. I have no fear that if they build it, someone will find a way to use it and eventually want more.

I bet you a holodeck immersive interactive style movie would take up a lot of space.
